Mardi Gras 2019 


The RTA has planned detours and service adjustments to accommodate transit services during Mardi Gras parades around New Orleans. Check out the 2019 Mardi Gras Guide to see maps and detours. Detours are subject to change. Stay up-to-date on adjustments by visiting Service Alerts or downloading the GoMobile app.

General Detour Information

All detours start two (2) hours before a parade begins. Detours will remain in place until clean up crews finish cleaning the parade route. Bus and streetcar lines not impacted by parades will be be on their regular routes. Remember that increased traffic and pedestrian movements may delay a bus or streetcar route even if there is no direct impact due to a parade.

Streetcar Detours

12 - St. Charles Streetcar
From Feburary 22th to February 27th, there will be adjustments to the St. Charles Streetcar. During parades, streetcars will operate between S. Claiborne Ave. and Valence St. Shuttle bus services will be provided from Valence St. to Canal St. via the 15 - Freret route, terminating at Elk Pl. and Canal St. Heading Uptown, shuttle buses will travel along Loyola Ave. to Calliope St. to O.C. Haley Blvd.

After parades, the streetcars will resume service along St. Charles Ave. From February 28th through Mardi Gras Day on March 5th, there will be no streetcar service between Valence St. and Canal St. at all. Before and after parades, shuttle bus services will operate between Valence St. and Canal St. along St. Charles Ave. During parades, shuttle bus services will operate from Valence St. to Canal St. via the 15 - Freret route, terminating at Elk Pl. and Canal St.
47 - Canal/Cemeteries
During parades, streetcar service will be provided from the Cemeteries Transit Center to Liberty St., and from French Market Station to Canal St. and Harrah’s. There will be no streetcar service between Liberty St. and the Riverfront during parades
48 - Canal/City Park
During parades, streetcar service will be provided from the City Park / Museum to Liberty St., and from French Market Station to Canal St. and Harrah’s. There will be no streetcar service between Liberty St. and the Riverfront during parades.
49 - Rampart - St. Claude
During Mardi Gras season, the Rampart-St. Claude will operate on its normal schedule. On Saturday, March 2nd for the Endymion Parade and Mardi Gras Day on March 5th, there will be no streetcar service from Elysian Fields Ave. to the Union Passenger Terminal.
Poydras Street Station and Julia Street Station on the Riverfront continue to be out of service due to construction on the Four Seasons project. To access streetcar service on the Riverfront, please use the
47-Canal-Cemeteries or 48-Canal-City Park / Museum running from French Market Station to Canal St.
and Harrah’s.

Uptown Parades

These parades start Uptown and head down St. Charles Ave. Service on St. Charles Ave. will stop at Cadiz St. for Uptown Parades and Mardi Gras Day (see maps below). For Endymion and some French Quarter/Marigny parades service will stop at Erato St. Bus service will stop as close to the parade routes as possible unless otherwise noted. Service will not cross parade routes.

French Quarter Parades

There are five parades this Carnival season that pass through or near the French Quarter in the Marigny. Below are the planned detours for these parades. Remember to plan extra time to reach your destination this Carnival season.

French Quarter Parades

route_12.png St. Charles Streetcar: Streetcars will stop at Howard Ave. during the parade. Shuttle buses will provide service between Howard Ave. and Canal St.

route_47-48.png route_48.png Canal Streetcars: Streetcars heading downtown will stop at Liberty St. during the parade. Streetcars will run on the Riverfront between Harrah's and French Market. 

route_5.png Marigny-Bywater: Buses will run between Elysian Fields Ave. and Poland Ave. starting at 4:30 pm until service ends at 6:45 pm.

route_10.png Tchoupitoulas & route_11-(1).png Magazine: Buses will detour down Calliope St. to Convention Center Blvd. to get to Canal St.

route_16.png S. Claiborne: Buses end at Canal St. and Elk Pl. No service on Poydras St. between Loyola Ave. and Magazine St.

route_55.png Elysian Fields: Buses will detour via St. Claude Ave. to Elk Pl. at Canal St.

Krewe of Cork

Expect delays on route_5-(1).png Marigny/Bywater and route_55-(1).png Elysian Fields during the parade. 

Krewe of Chewbacchus

route_5-(2).png Marigny-Bywater: Buses will stop running at 5:30 pm.

route_55-(2).png Elysian Fields: Buses will detour via Claiborne Ave., Esplanade Ave., Rampart St. to Elk Pl. and Canal St.

route_57.png Franklin & 80-Louisa-Desire: Buses will use Claiborne Ave. to Canal St. and Elk Place.

route_88.png St. Claude: Buses will use Claiborne Ave. and Esplanade Ave. to get to Rampart St. and regular route.

Krewe of Barkus

Expect delays on the Rampart streetcar, route_57-(1).png Franklin, route_88-(1).png St. Claude, and route_91.png Jackson/Esplanade during the parade. 

Westbank Parades

There are two parades on the Westbank that will require detours. Both parades are in Algiers. Remember to plan extra time to reach your destination during Carnival season.

The two parades are the Mystic Knights of Adonis and the Krewe of NOMTOC. Below are maps and detour information for both parades.

Endymion Parade – Saturday, March 2

Detours Outside of Downtown
 

route_12-(1).png St. Charles Shuttle Bus: Shuttle will stop at Union Passenger Terminal during Endymion parade. 

route_27.png Louisiana: No service between Delgado Community College and Cemeteries Transit Center.

route_32.png Leonidas-Treme: Route will be split on either side of the parade with service from Audubon Park to Banks St. and from Orleans Ave. & N. Scott St. to Basin St. & Canal St.

route_47-48-(1).png route_48-(1).png Canal Streetcars: No streetcar service during parade. Shuttle bus service will be provided from Basin St./Canal St. to the Cemeteries Transit Center along a detoured route. Route information will be posted once available.

route_49.png Rampart-St. Claude Streetcar: No service during parades. 

route_84.png Galvez: Buses from Lower Ninth Ward will end at N. Galvez St. and Bienville St. 

route_90.png Carrollton: The line will be split into two with service from Elysian Fields to Beauregard Circle (Stop ID: 4663) and S. Claiborne Ave. to Cemeteries Transit Center, following route_27-(1).png Louisiana route from S. Carrollton Ave. to Cemeteries Transit Center. 

route_94.png Broad: Service will be split on either side of Canal St., with stops at Banks St. and Bienville Ave. until the parade passes Broad Ave. 

Endymion

Mardi Gras Day Parades – Tuesday, March 5

Detours Outside of Downtown
 

All bus services will follow their Saturday schedules, except for the route_106.png Aurora, which will follow its weekday schedule. There will be no St. Charles shuttle bus on Mardi Gras Day.

The route_10-(1).png Tchoupitoulas and route_11.png Magazine will operate all the way to Audubon Park on Mardi Gras Day.

route_15.png Freret: Buses heading downtown will stop at the UPT. 

route_32-(1).png Leonidas-Treme: Buses will take Carrollton Ave. to Esplanade Ave. and follow the route_91-(1).png Jackson-Esplanade to N. Rampart St. and Bienville Ave.

route_49-(1).png Rampart-St. Claude Streetcar: No service during parades. 

route_94-(1).png Broad: Service will be split on either side of Orleans Ave. until parades are over.

Ferries

The Algiers Point-Canal Street Ferry operates extended hours during Mardi Gras. Below are the times of operation. The Lower Algiers/Chalmette Ferry will operate its normal schedule during the season. For more information on the ferries, click here.
