Ground-breaking Ceremony

posted 06/06/2011

The RTA staged a ground-breaking ceremony today for the new streetcar line that will run 1.5 miles between Amtrak’s Union Passenger Terminal (UPT) and Canal Street. Construction on the line is funded by a $45 million federal TIGER grant which is awarded to transportation projects that will spur economic growth and create environmental benefits.

During his remarks at the ground-breaking ceremony in front of the UPT, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood said, "There's not a lot of money in Washington. So when we give money, we give it to those organizations [like the RTA] that have great leadership. And I have no doubt we'll be back here again with more announcements."

Construction on the line will begin in July 2011 and is slated for completion during the middle of the following year.
