RTA extends its face mask requirements

Today, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) extended its face mask requirement while riding buses, streetcars, ferries, and paratransit vehicles, through March 18, 2022. This extension corresponds with the announcement made today by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

The RTA originally instituted a mask requirement for passengers on agency vehicles during the Spring of 2020. While this announcement extends the date of enforcement, all other aspects of the requirement remain unchanged, including exemptions and civil penalties. Failure to comply may result in denial of boarding or removal. The refusal to wear a mask is a violation of federal law and passengers may be subject to penalties under federal law.

New Links Project

New Links is a yearlong project to study and propose a network redesign of public transportation in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard Parishes. The project is a partnership between the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) and Regional Planning Commission (RPC), in collaboration with Jefferson Transit (JeT) and St. Bernard Urban Rapid Transit (SBURT).

In early 2021, the RTA Board of Commissioners adopted the New Links plan and now RTA staff are working, in conjunction with Jefferson Transit and City partners, to implement the plan recommendations.

Public Hearings

The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) will host two public hearings to discuss changes to the public transit network, as recommended by the New Links System Redesign. These virtual hearings are intended to provide an opportunity for interested people or organizations to be heard with respect to the proposed changes.
