New Orleans RTA to Receive $3 Million in City of New Orleans Budget to Support Funding of Algiers Ferry Operations

  • November 27th, 2024

$9.7M terminal renovation project planned for 2025-2026

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) announced today a $3 million allocation in the City of New Orleans’ 2025 Budget to support Canal Street-Algiers Point Ferry (Algiers Ferry) operations. This funding, approved by the City Council, was championed by District C Councilmember Freddie King III.

“Our community’s voices have been heard thanks to Councilmember King’s dedication to a ferry service that will continue to link the East Bank and West Bank, underscoring the value of collaboration between the RTA, local stakeholders, and municipal authorities. These kinds of investments guarantee that our neighborhoods stay linked and reachable,” said Fred Neal, Jr. RTA Board Chair.

“On behalf of the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA), thank you for your steadfast advocacy, dedication, and hard work in securing $3 million from the city budget to support the Canal Street-Algiers Point ferry operations,” said Lona Edwards Hankins, RTA CEO. “This critical investment will ensure the continued operation of this essential transit hub, serving as a lifeline for our riders and the Algiers community”

Councilmember King’s support in helping to address a funding gap in RTA’s 2025 Budget comes as the agency takes the next steps toward construction of the $9.7 million terminal renovation project planned for 2025-2026. Improvements will enhance the experience of the 500,000 passengers annually who rely on the Algiers Ferry, while strengthening connectivity and celebrating the vibrant history of Algiers. CEO Hankins will continue to work with City and State leaders to identify a permanent funding solution for the ferry operations.

The RTA presented its 2025 Draft Budget to the Board of Commissioners on Tuesday (Nov. 26) at its November meeting, with approval set for the December meeting to close out 2024.
