24-Hour Streetcar Service to Begin for Late-Night Workers

  • September 25th, 2018
Streetcar lines that run along Canal Street will terminate at the French Market Station.

What: The Regional Transit Authority’s (RTA) Board of Commissioners is extending the streetcar lines that run along Canal Street to go beyond the foot of Canal, travel along the Riverfront Streetcar line, and terminate at the French Market Station.

When: Service modification announced - September 25 @ 10am (during RTA’s monthly Board of Commissioners meeting)

Where: Both Canal Streetcar lines - Cemeteries and City Park/Museum will extend beyond the Harrah’s Casino stop and continue along the Riverfront Streetcar line to the French Market Station stop.

Timeframe: Streetcar extensions to commence - Sunday, September 30, 2018

Why: In an effort to help ease the commute of late-night hospitality workers, the RTA’s Canal Streetcar - Cemeteries and the Canal Streetcar – City Park/Museum lines will take the new route, offering 24-hour service to late-night hotel and restaurant workers in the French Quarter and the Central Business District.

The Riverfront Streetcar line, which currently operates until mid-night, will temporarily be replaced by the Canal Streetcar - Cemeteries and the Canal Streetcar – City Park/Museum lines, which provide 24-hour service to the French Market Station stop. There will be no service to the Poydras, Julia, and Churchill Station stops, along the Riverfront Streetcar line, until construction is completed on the Four Seasons project.

Hospitality workers have been asking for better late night service, and the RTA is sensitive to the transportation needs of this community. We understand late-night transportation options are limited and commutes can be long for service-industry workers, who are the backbone of our community.

This service extension will connect transit users, coming from the lower end of the French Quarter and the Marigny, to all the other late-night bus and streetcar line options that tie into the Canal Street line and take riders throughout the city.

“I applaud the RTA for extending the route and hours of the Canal streetcar line,” said New Orleans City Councilmember and Transportation Chair, Kristen Gisleson Palmer.  “This will provide a safer transportation option for hospitality employees who rely on our transit system to get them to and from work, especially during late-night hours.”

In addition, starting September 30, the #16 South Claiborne bus line will be extended to 24-hours to match the 24-hour service provided on the #39 Tulane bus line that will take employees, patients and their families to Causeway Boulevard, near Ochsner Main Campus. This addition will give riders more ways to access the hospital and will provide a needed 24-hour transit corridor through Uptown.

The RTA also provides late-night service to New Orleans East via the #63 New Orleans East Owl and the #100 Algiers Loop Owl bus lines.
