Why: Judges say impeccable pre-planning, resourcefulness, and attention to quality all helped secure the Regional “Award of Merit” for the Rampart Streetcar Expansion Project. This is the first time the RTA has received this recognition. The expansion project went head-to-head with more than 100 submissions from across the south, including: Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.
After two years of construction, the original #49 Rampart-St. Claude streetcar line opened for service in October 2016. The project was successfully completed on time and below the budget established for the project. The cost of construction totaled $42-million.
The completed line now runs along Rampart Street, from Canal Street to St. Claude Avenue. It gives riders more options when traveling the city and furthers the RTA’s goal of improving local routes and services.
