RTA nears return to full service for bus, streetcar, ferry operations
- September 14th, 2024
NEW ORLEANS – Today, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) announced the almost complete return to full operations as it continues to respond to this week's storm.
Full bus service returned on Thursday, while streetcar lines have become fully operational except for a few blocks along Canal Street that requires bus service in response to a power outage. The St. Charles Streetcar Line resumed service on Friday afternoon, with Algiers Ferry service resumed a few hours later. Customer Service Centers, Rideline and Paratransit reservations have resumed normal operations.
“This week demonstrated the dedication and professionalism of all of our employees, including our Operations, Safety & Security, IT, and Maintenance teams as we worked around the clock to bring back our services and keep the public informed every step of the way," said RTA CEO Lona Edwards Hankins. “As soon as they were able to our roadwork crews were out in the late-night/early-morning hours, clearing streetcar lines and debris, trimming trees that had fallen on catenary lines, documenting vehicles obstructing streetcar lines, and ensuring that we could return to at least a limited bus service first thing Thursday morning. Our IT team worked to restore our phone lines to field customer questions, concerns, and requests. This would not have happened without the diligence of these teams. We appreciate them.
“I also want to thank Mayor Cantrell for her leadership of her team, which includes the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness/NOLA Ready and the countless first-responders and public safety workers who become our partners in times of need. We know this isn't our first storm, and it won't be our last. But as I tell my team, we have a plan and we just need to work the plan. Finally, a big 'thank you' to our riders for their patience and understanding. We will always work to keep your needs front and center.”
RTA will continue to communicate service adjustments and other information at norta.com/francine, in real-time via its Le Pass app, and partnering with NOLA Ready. Text NOLAREADY to 77295 for alerts.
