TSA Administrator Awards RTA for Strong Security Program and Commitment to Passenger Safety.
NEW ORLEANS – The Regional Transit Authority, RTA, received the Transit Security Administration, TSA, “Gold Standard” Award for a perfect score in strong transit security program and commitment to passenger safety.
The RTA was one of 15 rail and mass transit agencies recognized by the TSA for receiving the highest rating on the Baseline Assessment for Security Enhancement (BASE) program. The “Gold Standard” is Awarded by achieving the highest rating on the BASE review of 17 categories in Security and Emergency Preparedness Action Items. The BASE assessment evaluates agencies’ security programs and identifies vulnerabilities transit systems address.
The BASE program, a voluntary comprehensive review of transit agencies, establishes a standard for individual system security program and assesses progress. The program assesses fundamental categories for a sound transit security program such as security plans, security training, drills/exercise programs, public outreach efforts and background check programs.
Through the 9/11 Commission Act’s security assessment section, BASE was developed to increase domain awareness, response preparedness, enhance prevention and protection capabilities of America’s transit systems. The TSA identifies transit infrastructure, systems and vulnerabilities by assisting public transportation security programs.
John Pistole, TSA Administrator, recognized and presented the “Gold Standard” Award to the RTA on Wednesday, March 14 at the RTA office on 2817 Canal Street. For more information about this Award and the RTA visit www.norta.com or call 504-248-3900.
