RTA to Begin Connected Rail Improvement Projects Along the St. Charles Streetcar Line
- July 23rd, 2026
NEW ORLEANS – Beginning Monday, July 27, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) will begin two coordinated rail infrastructure improvement projects along the St. Charles Streetcar Line. The Carrollton Double Crossover Project and the Harmony Circle Track Replacement Project will improve accessibility, address critical infrastructure needs, and support the long-term reliability of one of New Orleans' most iconic transit corridors.
Because construction will take place simultaneously in two locations, RTA will operate two temporary bus bridges while maintaining active streetcar service from the Riverbend to the Lower Garden District.
At the outset of construction, service will operate as follows:
- Bus Bridge #1: Canal Street/Carondelet Street to Erato Street/St. Charles Avenue
- Active Streetcar Service: Erato Street/St. Charles Avenue to Carrollton Avenue/St. Charles Avenue (Riverbend)
- Bus Bridge #2: Carrollton Avenue/St. Charles Avenue to Carrollton Avenue/Claiborne Avenue
The Carrollton Double Crossover Project will relocate sections of rail and overhead electrical wiring near the line’s terminus at Carrollton and Claiborne Avenues. The work will support accessibility improvements at the streetcar stop in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Construction is expected to last approximately six months.
At Harmony Circle, RTA will replace deteriorated sections of track that have affected St. Charles Streetcar service since July 6. These repairs are necessary to restore reliable service through this portion of the line and are expected to continue through the end of August.
RTA is coordinating with the contractor to finalize the construction schedule and will monitor service throughout both projects. Riders will be notified of schedule updates or changes to the temporary service plan as work progresses.
Riders can find the latest service information in the Le Pass app, at norta.com/stcharles-line-work, or by calling the RTA Rideline at 504-248-3900.
