New Orleans RTA announces partnership to hire graduates from Louisiana State Penitentiary’s Automotive Technology Program

New Orleans, LA – Today, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) announced its new partnership with JOB1 Career Solutions to create On the Job Training (OTJT) training for non-violent offenders who successfully complete the requirements of the Louisiana State Penitentiary’s Auto Mechanic Apprenticeship Program upon release. Initially, the RTA will hire bus mechanic and body repair technician trainees, both at $23.67 per hour, up to 40 hours per week for a six-month trial period. The agency hopes to expand this program to additional career pathways in 2022.

RTA awarded $18.5M in USDOT funding for new transit hubs and modern fare technology systems

Today, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) announced the award of $18,500,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability & Equity (RAISE) Grant. The agency intends to utilize the funding to deliver a suite of public transit improvements including the design and construction of two new neighborhood transit hubs and a fare technology system that will integrate mobile, tap card, credit card, and modern payment technologies.
RTA extends Algiers Point – Canal Street ferry service for one hour due to approved fireworks display

The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority will suspend ferry service along the Canal Street – Algiers Point route on Wednesday, November 17 from 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm due to a Coast Guard approved fireworks display.
New Orleans RTA receives APTA’s 2021 Rail Safety Certificate of Merit award for Light Rail/Streetcar

Today, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) was named the winner of American Public Transportation Association (APTA)’s 2021 Rail Safety Certificate of Merit award for Light Rail/Streetcar systems. The Gold Award and Certificate of Merit winners were announced at APTA’s Transform EXPO held in Orlando, Florida.
The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority will suspend ferry service along the Lower Algiers – Chalmette route on Tuesday, November 9 beginning at 8:00 a.m. due to a mandatory U.S. Coast Guard inspection. Ferry service will resume once the inspection has concluded.
RTA awarded rail safety grant funding from Operation Lifesaver, Inc.

NEW ORLEANS - Today, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) was awarded $20,000 from Operation Lifesaver, Inc. for streetcar safety initiatives. The agency intends to utilize the funding to launch a public outreach safety campaign to address unsafe pedestrian activities and behaviors as well as left-turn streetcar-vehicle collisions. RTA was one of six agencies in four states awarded funding to support various rail safety initiatives.
Algiers Point - Canal Street ferry temporarily suspends service; moves to new temporary location

The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) will suspend ferry service along the Algiers Point – Canal Street route at the end of service on Monday, November 8 due to ferry terminal construction and the end of the temporary lease of the landing barge at Mardi Gras World.
RTA joins FTA’s Climate Sustainable Transit for a Healthy Planet Challenge

Today, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority’s (RTA) Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution supporting the agency’s participation in the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Climate Sustainable Transit for a Healthy Planet Challenge. RTA joins more than 70 transit agencies across the country in signing a pledge to develop a climate action, electrification or sustainability plan that details greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction strategies.
